Background: Junior Education Day (JED) is a hands-on livestock education event that provides students across regional South Australia with practical training in sheep and cattle husbandry, while building agricultural skills, confidence and connections to the livestock industry.
Established in 2019, the event has grown to attract more than 200 students each year. Students choose either a sheep or cattle stream and rotate through practical training stations led by experienced livestock industry professionals. Training covers core skills including commercial ewe and hogget classing, wool handling, shearer training and other essential livestock husbandry practices. The event also helps prepare students and teachers for livestock competitions at country shows and the Royal Adelaide Show.
UNFS has secured two years of funding through the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) to support the long-term sustainability of Junior Education Day. The funding will enable UNFS to provide behind-the-scenes administration and event coordination, reducing the increasing workload on the volunteer-run Jamestown Show Society and its Sheep & Wool Committee.
The Jamestown Show Sheep & Wool Committee will continue to provide volunteer support, presenters and on-ground coordination. Together, UNFS and the Jamestown Show Society are working to ensure Junior Education Day remains a high-quality, industry-relevant learning opportunity that strengthens livestock skills, supports agricultural career pathways and builds the capability and resilience of the next generation of regional producers..
